blog 9

In journalism 2, I learned several different ways the media can and has effect our society. To be honest, I have never thought that we humans are affected by the media so deeply before I took this class, but now, I am aware that if we believe in whatever the media decide to show us, we are nothing but fools following their expectations. Through the process of finding information for blog assignment 8, I have a whole new understanding for the first amendment.

This is a video that tells how media affects people, children specifically.

blog 8: media law

In 2009, the Massachusetts state created a 35-foot buzzer zone around the abortion clinic's entrance, exits and driveways. Protesters, especially those who engage in "Pro-life counseling" says this violated the First Amendment it limited free speech too broadly.

Personally, I don't think what Massachusetts state did was wrong, given the fact that those people often suffer from harassment, insults, etc. What the government did was to give those people a private space, an area where they don't have to hear those dirty words. I don't think the government is wrong at all.

blog 7: annotated items for research paper

Rawnsley, G. (2000). The media and popular protest in pre-democratic Taiwan. Historical Journal of Film, Radio, and Television, 20(4), 565-580.

It tells during the long period of martial law in Taiwan under the authoritarian government, the author examines the media's role in Taiwan's liberalization, which granted opposition a legal voice, increased popular awareness and understanding of the changing political agenda, and allowed the government to publicize and legitimize its political transformation.

Jui-Feng, T. (2010). The Media and Suicide: Evidence-Based on Population Data over 9 Years in Taiwan. Suicide & Life - Threatening Behavior, 40(1), 81-86.

Taiwan politics: Next Media deal falls to free press concerns. (2013, March 27). EIU ViewsWire.

It first mentions some information about NextMedia's collapse in Taiwan and what consequences it had caused. Then it tells Mr. Tsai Eng-meng's background information and his  political views that are seen by some as overly sympathetic to mainland China's government.

blog 5: topics

The first thing that came into my mind for my presentation is to discuss what cause the mass media in Taiwan so chaotic. I want to compare the media in Taiwan and media in the US, and see what are some big differences between them.

blog assignment 4

My favorite movie from year 2013 and 2014 is “Captain Phillips” directed by Paul Greengrass. I first saw this movie at the AMC Theater. The reason this movie is my favorite is because the theatricality is nice, also it’s based on a true story, which makes it even easier to touch people’s heartstrings.

For my all-time favorite movie, I’ll say it’s “Inception” directed by Christopher Nolan. I rented this movie, and watched it at home. My favorite part of this movie is almost at the end, the gyro kept circling, and then the end, leaving an opening ending for the audiences to imagine the actual ending.

blog assignment 3

The main difference between this magazine and other baseball magazines is that I have an area that’s specially designed for readers who’s got something to say or discuss about. They can e-mail me what they want to say or discuss about, after selection, I then will print them on my magazine.
Since this is a baseball magazine, I will say it’s for readers at any age. No matter what’s your socioeconomic status, your ethnicity, or your gender, everyone can read it.

        Five advertisers:
1.1.     Sporting goods, such as Dick’s sporting goods.
2.2.     Foods, such as McDonald’s.
3.3.    Banks, such as Chase.
4.4.    Sports drinks, such as Gatorade.
5.5.    Telecom, such as Verizon

        Five articles:
1.1.     For the first one, I plan to tell some background history and its origin of baseball. I will also tell the readers how the modern baseball is formed.
2.2.     The second article, I plan to introduce the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.  I will briefly talk about what’s the qualification the players/coaches/umpires have to meet in order to join the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
3.3.  .   For my third article, I will introduce some basic baseball knowledge to those who are interested in baseball but not fully understand how it’s played.
4.4.     For my fourth article, I plan to leave this place for the reader who’s got something to say.  No matter it’s how they feel about a player or what they want to tell their favorite team.
5.5.     For the last part, I plan to set it as a Q&A session. If there are not enough questions, then I will change this part into some major events that happened in the baseball history.

blog assignment 2: books

I like to read when I have free time, and so far, I can’t even remember how many books I’ve read in my life, but there are some books that I would like to introduce to you. There three books have influenced my life in some different ways.

The first book is The Shack written by Wm. Paul Young.  This book changed my attitude toward my belief. I was an atheistic person, but after reading this book, I’ve started to believe in God.

The second book is The Swarm: A Novel  written by Frank Schatzing. This book tells a simple, yet often forgotten truth. If people keep harming nature, sooner or later, nature will have a counterattack on mankind.  The book taught me that if we want to live on Earth forever, we have to live peacefully with nature, instead of unilateral destruction.

The third book is Digital Fortress written by Dan Brown. This book taught me that in today’s society, personal privacy literally means nothing to the government. If the government wants, they can dig up all the secrets one has, even the person’s ancestor’s secrets. Thus if we want to keep our personal privacy safe enough, we have to be extra careful than ever before.

Media in Taiwan

I was born in Taiwan, so I'm going to talk about media in Taiwan. No matter if you are talking about TV news, newspapers, or the headlines of some Internet websites, the most obvious problem is that most of them only post news about Taiwan itself. They rarely report things that take place outside of Taiwan, and for that reason, some Internet users call Taiwan a "ghost island".

Take TV news for example. Recently, America has some actions that target ISIS, but in Taiwan, almost all of the TV programs are reporting news about Asian Games (Asiad), about how many gold medals Chinese Taipei have won so far, and what is our rank comparing to other Asian countries right now. You can barely see anything that’s related to ISIS anywhere else. However, there are still some international news that the TV programs will report. However, rather than actual report the news, they make the international news a list, and all the reporters have to do is to read the titles one by one. In less than one minute, the international news' part is done, then move on to the next news that's about Taiwan.

But during my childhood, the media in Taiwan weren't like this. The reason that changed the environment is because Hong Kong's NextMedia came to Taiwan. NectMedia focus on artist's personal lives, whether an artist is having an affair; or an artist is dating with another artist, all these kind of gossips are what NextMedia reports all day long back at the time. Other TV news programs found out that NextMedia’s rating is better than them, so other TV programs started to report news like these one after another. Gradually, TV news became only to report some local news, and no international news. This kind of situation remains unchanged even after NextMedia moved out of Taiwan.
